Head, neck, and brain tumor embolization.

چکیده
The embolization of vascular tumors of the head, neck, and CNS has become an important adjunct to the surgical treatment of these tumors. The procedure has resulted in reduced morbidity and mortality and helps to facilitate the removal of many of these tumors. In tumors that are not amenable to surgical therapy, embolization may occasionally be used as the primary mode of treatment. These guidelines are to be used in quality improvement programs to assess head, neck, and brain tumor embolization procedures. The most important processes of care are patient selection, performing the procedure, and monitoring the patient. The outcome measures or indicators for these processes are indications, success rates, and complication rates. Outcome measures are assigned threshold levels.

Head, neck, and brain tumor embolization guidelines
BACKGROUND Management of vascular tumors of the head, neck, and brain is often complex and requires a multidisciplinary approach. Peri-operative embolization of vascular tumors may help to reduce intra-operative bleeding and operative times and have thus become an integral part of the management of these tumors. Advances in catheter and non-catheter based techniques in conjunction with the grow...
متن کاملEndovascular Embolization of Head and Neck Tumors
Endovascular tumor embolization as adjunctive therapy for head and neck cancers is evolving and has become an important part of the tools available for their treatment. Careful study of tumor vascular anatomy and adhering to general principles of intra-arterial therapy can prove this approach to be effective and safe. Various embolic materials are available and can be suited for a given tumor a...
متن کاملTherapeutic Embolization of Cranial Tumors
The aim of embolization is to devascularize the tumor bed by filling intratumoral vascularization as deep as possible into the precapillary level to initiate tumor necrosis, decrease blood loss during surgery and thus make it easier and possibly, more radical, and in tumor of nasal cavity to stop epistaxis (Berenstein, 2004, Valavanis, 2002, Gupta, 2006, Smith, 2006). The procedure is angiograp...
متن کاملStroke from Delayed Embolization of Polymerized Glue Following Percutaneous Direct Injection of a Carotid Body Tumor
A 52-year-old male with right carotid body tumor underwent direct percutaneous glue (n-butylcyanoacrylate [NBCA]) embolization. Several hours later, he developed left hemiparesis from embolization of the polymerized glue cast. Migration of glue during percutaneous tumor embolization is presumed to occur only in the liquid state, which may lead to stroke or cranial nerve deficits. To the best of...
متن کاملCurrent imaging techniques for head and neck tumors.
Modern head and neck imaging has led to advances in both the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancers. Both computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies provide important information about the location and extent of neoplasm, particularly with respect to the interface of tumor with bone, fat, muscles and other soft tissues, air, blood vessels, dura, and brain. C...
